
Vegan and vegetarian places to eat in Cardiff
We’ve rounded up the cafés, restaurants and other places to dine in Cardiff where you can tuck into great vegan and vegetarian eats.
Some of the bigger chains which are popular among veggie diners are included, as are stalls and stores where you can stock up on meat-free food you love.
1. Anna-Loka
Anna-Loka, Cardiff’s first 100% vegan café , serves a full menu of vegan alternatives to classic dishes.
The café, which has around 20 tables, serves up free-from breads, custom-made pizzas, pancakes, doughnuts and smoky, crispy vegan rashers.
And to wash it all down there’s a bar providing Kombucha, or what the ancient Chinese called the ‘tea of immortality’ – an alcohol-free, fermented tea beverage which tastes like something between sparkling apple cider and champagne.

2. Milgi
The restaurant, with its slick black frontage and kooky decor, has been a popular foodie destination in Cardiff since it opened in 2006.
They say the aim is to source as local and organic as possible and to re-define “what eating a plant-based diet can be.”

3. Caban @ number 40
Formerly Canteen on Clifton Street , the venue changes its menu regularly.
It describes itself as “a busy, sometimes noisy, lively, always welcoming restaurant for lovers of vegetarian and regular cuisine.”

4. Crumbs Kitchen
Crumbs Kitchen specialises in healthy, vegetarian and vegan food.
There are plenty of hearty eats including soup, jacket potatoes, curries and chilli.

5. The Parsnipship
After finding their feet at the Riverside Market in Cardiff, The Parsnipship team have come on leaps and bounds and are now producing and selling their unique flavours and inventive vegan and vegetarian food at events across the UK.

6. Vegetarian Food Studio
Enjoy an authentic and vegetarian taste of India at this purely vegetarian restaurant which also has many dishes for vegans.
It uses fresh vegetables, herbs and spices to create unique vegetarian dishes. There are starters, smaller plates and Bombay snacks as well as oriental dishes
Sample dish: Paneer Dosa, a rice and lentil pancake filled with dry potato curry with grated paneer (cottage cheese) and green chillies. Served with sambar (red lentil soup) and coconut chutney (£5.45)

7. Madhav
This is an Asian mini-market and a great veggie café too. Madhav brings a vegetarian twist to the classic Indian restaurant.
Sample dish: Thali special and potato balls (that includes vegetable curry, daal, rice, two different types of vegetables in spiced sauces, a potato fritter, chutney and jalebi.)

8. Cosy Club
It’s not a vegetarian restaurant, but it offers some tasty grub for those who are vegan or don’t eat meat.
Sample dish: Beetroot, lentil, pearl barley and herb burger with sliced gherkin and tomato, served in a sourdough bun with house salad and fries (£7.95)

9. Fresh

This is one of the Welsh capital’s most popular sandwich bars and each lunchtime you will see a queue snaking outside the little shop. The family-owned business provides a varied menu with paninis and baguettes and a good selection for vegetarians. There isn’t really much seating so it’s a good one if you’re on the go.
Sample dish: Oven baked garlic field mushroom panini with dijon mustard, finished with rocket and Parmesan and quorn (£4.35).

10. Clancy’s
Clancy’s is another place to grab a bite if you’re on the go.
There are plenty of spices and ingredients for cooking at home and you can also swing by for lunch too.

11. Falafel Kitchen
It sells some options for meat-eaters, but if you’re a fan of falafel then this place scores high with reviewers on TripAdvisor. They sell plenty of other Mediterranean inspired cuisine though.

12. Simply V
This is a great vegan store where you can stock up on products.
You can also try cakes, baked goods and other fresh food to take away including sandwiches, salads, pies and pasties but they have also just added seating.

13. Wagamama
A big chain, but one that bears vegetarians in mind.
You’re told when you order that whatever dish is ready first is the one you’ll get.
Sample dish: Stir-fried tofu, aubergines, red peppers, asparagus, mangetout, tender stem broccoli and red onion on a bed of baby gem lettuce dressed in sweet chilli sauce and garnished with cashew nuts (£9.25).

14. Las Iguanas
There are a few Las Iguanas restaurants around, but the good thing about them is they have pulled all the vegetarian and vegan options out of the main menu so you don’t have to search for them.
So if Latin American food is your thing then this is a good choice.
Sample dish: Flour tortilla smothered in a smoky chilli and tomato sauce and crumbled cheese, filled with roast butternut squash, roasted red peppers, iron-rich spinach and gooey cheese, on a bed of spring onion rice, sunk in refried beans (£9.25).

15. Wahaca
It’s been a firm favourite since opening in Cardiff , and offers a good mix of options for meat-eaters and veggies.
The Mexican chain’s menu is split into street food dishes and larger “platos fuertes”, such as a winter vegetable burrito.
Sample dish: Grilled courgette, summer corn and cactus folded in corn tortillas and soaked in a gently smoky Pasilla de Oaxaca and crème fraiche tomato sauce (£7.95).
