Diners at a new Cardiff restaurant the Classroom will be able to enjoy dizzying panoramic views across the capital.

The Classroom, sat on the fifth floor of the new Cardiff and Vale College city centre campus claims to be the city’s highest eatery.

The restaurant opened in 2015 inside the recently opened £45m site, and serves modern European cuisine from a state of the art open kitchen.

Visiting guest chefs

Staff include the college’s hospitality and catering students, guided by chefs with experience from Michelin and AA Rosette restaurants around the UK.

Some of the industry’s top chefs will also make guest visits, offering masterclasses to budding kitchen hands.

The self-proclaimed tallest restaurant in Cardiff aims to provide a real-life working environment for the college’s students, and the restaurant has already been supported by Cardiff Masterchef finalist Larkin Cen and the owner of Wales’ best restaurant according to the Waitrose’s Good Food Guide, James Sommerin.

Eric Courturier, Deputy Head of Hospitality and Tourism, Alex Smith, Head Chef, Thomas Bentkowski Food and Beverage Manager and two Cardiff and Vale College hospitality students

Head chef Alex Smith said: “They have already dedicated their time and efforts into developing our students at The Classroom – running monthly masterclasses and confirming pop-up events; further inspiring the students and complementing their studies with the most up to date industry skills to ensure they are working to the standards needed by employers and enabling them to step straight into the world of work.”

‘Fed by the next generation of top chefs’

Mr Smith moved to The Classroom from his role as the executive sous chef at St David’s Hotel in Cardiff Bay and has worked alongside several Michelin starred chefs.

He said: “The Classroom provides our guests with a unique culinary experience.

“They will be served and catered for by the next generation of hospitality and catering professionals; current students who are in the midst of learning their trade, and who operate alongside and under the guidance of a professional and experienced team of chefs and front of house staff.”

Kay Martin, deputy principal for curriculum and quality for the college, said: “We are delighted to be opening The Classroom ready for the Christmas season.

“At Cardiff and Vale College we are serious about ensuring our students progress and working with employers to ensure students not only have the qualifications but the right skills, experience and passion to enter and succeed in the employment market and add value to an employer.”
