The 70th annual Bridgend County Show received a very warm reception from competitors and visitors despite the unseasonable weather.

Crowds flocked to the Pencoed College showground for the three-day event to take in the wide variety of local produce on offer and shows in the arenas.

There was the usual horse section and show jumping, as well as displays by Talygarn Equestrian Vaulters, a falconry display, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Penybont Gymnastics in the main arena.

Ogmore AM Huw Irranca-Davies was the guest speaker for the business breakfast in the main marquee on the opening morning on Friday.

He said: “It was a pleasure to help launch the 70th Bridgend County Show as the guest speaker at the business breakfast.

“A young Princess Elizabeth wasn’t yet on the throne when the show started in 1946, bread-rationing was introduced, and the Bakelite Wireless Radio was the top-selling mod-con of the year!

“So it is wonderful to see the show going so strong after all these years, providing fun for families and bringing together traders and farmers and equestrians and competitors from across South Wales and beyond.

“It’s a real credit to the committee and volunteers who’ve put so much into it over decades.”
